IPHCA Answers the Top Questions about e-net

Q:  How does NextGen® compare to other vendors?

A: NextGen® is the premier vendor for CHCs!

One of the most important decisions in developing a health information network is selecting the system to be implemented. Not only is the technology and functionality of the system critical, but so is the reputation and viability of the vendor. With this in mind, IPHCA engaged in a rigorous and exhaustive process of identifying and evaluating potential candidates, and selected NextGen® Healthcare Information Systems. IPHCA’s decision was bolstered by independent ratings of NextGen and its products.

In 2006, Gartner (the world’s leading information technology research and advisory company) evaluated 21 product lines marketed by 16 vendors providing both practice management and electronic medical records applications. The vendors were evaluated based on their ability to execute and the completeness of their vision, then their products were plotted on a “magic quadrant” as niche players, visionaries, challengers, or leaders. NextGen was one of two vendors that earned a spot in the most desirable “leader” quadrant.

NextGen’s leadership in the market was reaffirmed in 2008, when the AC Group released its tenth report on practice management system, electronic medical record, and electronic health record applications. Touted as one of the most comprehensive evaluations of leading PMS/EMR/EHR applications, the study included evaluations of 94 products over many categories. For overall rankings, only 10 vendors including NextGen received five-star ratings for their practice management and EHR products. In addition, NextGen ranked first for EHR Functionality Ratings.

For the evaluation of combined products, the AC Group considered EHR and PMS functionality; the viability, support, and implementation methodology of the vendor; and satisfaction of the users. NextGen ranked #1 for Large Practices (>100 Physicians), and the two Mid-Size Practices categories (25 to 99 Physicians, and 3 to 9 Physicians).

Perhaps most importantly, NextGen was ranked #1 for providing the best overall functionality for FQHCs. As the report points out, “many of the EHR vendors do NOT provide the functionality and reporting required for [FQHCs].” Already at work in hundreds of CHCs across the country, NextGen has proven itself as the leading system for health centers.

And finally, for CHCs applying for EHR funding, many funding sources require the selected product to be CCHIT certified. The e-net participants can rest assured that NextGen’s EMR product received CCHIT’s latest seal of approval (2008 certification) and will continue to lead the industry in the evolving standards and regulations.

By selecting NextGen and its suite of products, IPHCA is building a strong foundation for its health information network. The e-net members enjoy the benefits of a comprehensive information management system that is robust enough for a large practice but tailored to meet the specific needs of FQHCs, and is backed by an industry leading company.
